I was exposed to the real power of software when I learned about ArcGIS 9 in the Army—a tool dedicated to exploiting the power of digital cartography. I moved on to Joint Test, where I learned that throwing money at software could be avoided by establishing a formal business process. But I finished my degree in programming still thinking software was the end-all, be-all solution.

Twenty-two years later, I'm still writing code, but I've learned that no matter how many tools can generate code, the hardest part of software is understanding the problem. Who would have thought that those silly requirements would be the hurdle AI couldn't overcome?

But it's not just about AI's gaps. My agile team and I sat through more than a few business meetings for a demo, only to hear, "Oh, we didn't give you the new spec. We'll do this again next sprint."

That experience, along with an emphatic quote from AI evangelist Ed Donner, led me to the same pot at the end of the rainbow: write code that has real business value.
